Practical tips for gloom

When you are gloom, you have feelings of listlessness and you don’t feel like doing anything. The negative thoughts affect your life. Yet there are some things you can do yourself to end the negative spiral and help the gloom symptoms disappear. They seem like simple and obvious tips, but when you feel gloomy it is often difficult to make to it.

  1. Talk about your gloomy feelings with your family or close friends. You can share your concerns and it will provide more understanding of your family and friends. They can support you and you understand each other better.
  2. Have a regular sleep pattern. Try to get up on time, go to bed on time, and avoid daytime naps.
  3. Don’t try to isolate yourself, even if the temptation is great. Keep in touch with friends and family. Also try to maintain your normal routine and daily activities, such as work, sports, study, hobbies, etc.
  4. Eat as healthy as possible and at regular times. Don’t skip meals. Try to avoid eating too much, too little or unhealthy food because of your gloomy feelings.
  5. Take time to relax and find something that suits you. Think of meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, making a walk in the nature, listening to music, reading a book, etc.
  6. Exercise is important for almost all mental issues, including gloominess. Think of walking, cycling or gardening. By being physically active your body gets a positive impulse. Running in particular has been proven to be effective against depression and gloom.
  7. When you feel gloomy, negative thoughts dominate and you keep worrying. Your negative thoughts keep spinning in your head and it usually doesn’t lead to a solution. Be aware of this and try to stop the negative thoughts or turn them into more positive ones.
  8. You usually have a sad mood to process a bad event. Allow yourself enough time for this. Even though it may seem like you can never be happy again, realize that your gloomy feelings will pass, it is temporary.
  9. If worries or problems are the cause of your sad feelings, it is wise to examine how you can deal with the problems. Depending on the nature of the problems, perhaps with the help of friends, family, colleagues or professional support.
  10. Take your symptoms seriously. If there is no improvement or your symptoms get worse, seek professional help.

Treatment for gloom

If you suffer from mild or moderate gloom, you may be able to overcome your gloom with the tips above. If this does not work, it is wise to ask for psychological help. With professional support you can get rid of your gloom, but you can also prevent your symptoms from getting worse and that the gloom slowly turns into a depression.

Don’t be ashamed of your sad and gloomy feelings. Unfortunately, this happens regularly, and people wait too long to seek help. People think they have to live the perfect life: perform, be happy and have everything right. Often an attempt is made to hide the symptoms for as long as possible, which will only make the symptoms worse.

It is therefore important to seek help in time. As with physical problems, treatment can become more difficult the longer you wait and the duration of the treatment will then increase.

During the treatment we identify the cause of your sadness, which symptoms you have and how this affects your daily life. The goal of the treatment is that you find again the energy to do things and that you regain the pleasure in life.

Therapy can also help if your sadness is caused by a major event that is difficult for you to deal with, such as the death of a loved one, a divorce or loss of work.
